Kindergarten is a special time for families, often marking both the start of a child’s life beyond the home as well as the beginning of a family’s participation within the broader community. Early Years Education is a fundamental support system for future development, health and wellbeing of each child.
Our service is guided by The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia that establishes key principles and practices for early childhood education. Our unique program caters for children aged between three and five years who come from a broad range of socio-economic backgrounds. In partnership with Port Phillip Special School we help children with special needs further their learning and maximise their potential.
Our specialist staff work to create a safe, caring place where every child is valued and have opportunities to grow emotionally, socially, physically, verbally and intellectually.
Our Kindergarten’s foundation values:
At Uniting Port Melbourne's Kindergarten we nurture children’s natural enthusiasm to learn. Our child-centred, play-based curriculum leads children towards self-motivation and challenge, encourage creativity, perseverance, self-discipline and commitment.
Our classroom is organised as a welcoming place for exploration and discovery as well as for communication and collaboration. Given developmentally appropriate materials and the freedom to follow their interests, children joyfully teach themselves through play, art, dance, music, movement and interacting with others.
We actively support the inclusion of children with additional needs. Children in our care are those with chromosomal disorders, varying degrees of autism and other identified behavioural, physical or developmental difficulties.
Our teachers promote children’s development by focusing on their abilities and interests in such areas of learning as literacy, numeracy and language. By integrating children into a mainstream and experienced environment we boost their self-esteem and enhance their communication and interaction skills.
Uniting Port Melbourne Kindergarten strictly adheres to all child safe practices and ensure all staff is thoroughly screened in accordance with the Department of Health and Human Services Child Safe Standards.
Our Kindergarten’s teachers are regularly involved in relevant professional development opportunities, such as conferences, seminars and presentations. This ensures that their knowledge and expertise meet the highest standard of educational trends.
