Youth Services

South Port Uniting believes that youth development programs centred on education and community connection are fundamental to the successful transition from childhood to adulthood.

We help young people navigate this difficult phase by providing services and opportunities that support them in developing a sense of a personal competence, usefulness, belonging and empowerment.

In-school Programs

BOLT™ (Bicycles Over Lunchtime)

BOLT™ is an innovative program which helps primary school students remain engaged in education and the local community.

Through participating in bike maintenance activities young people learn valuable life skills such as communication, leadership, responsibility and teamwork. Positive male mentorship and socialising help them gain confidence and build peer relationships and friendships.

BOLT was introduced by South Port UnitingCare in 2013 at one local school and over the next 3 years the program expanded to 27 schools growing its footprint throughout Greater Melbourne and regional Victoria. As of today the program has been delivered to over 500 participants.

To know more about the program contact Chris Milne on 9690 1188 or Chris.Milne@southportuniting.org.au.

COLT (Cooking Over Lunchtime)

COLT helps upper primary school students who are experiencing food insecurity develop a positive relationship with food and learn about healthy eating habits. The program teaches them the basics of food literacy such as food sourcing, nutrition, cooking and hygiene.

Our youth workers and volunteers cook together with students during lunchtime and explore a wide range of food related topics to describe and encourage a balanced approach to eating for a long and healthy life.

Afterschool Programs

BOLT After School

BOLT After School is built on the success of its lunchtime sessions. It started as a response to a request from students who are doing BOLT now, as they identified this as an opportunity to further develop their bike maintenance skills, to meet and interact with other BOLT participants from other surrounding schools and to build a social network.

The program delivers the same kind of experience as the lunchtime “in-school” version, but in an “out-of-school” location at 317-329 Dorcas Street, South Melbourne. Sessions take place once a week on a Wednesday from 3:30pm to 5pm.
